“Thopputhurai Muslim Association ” was formed in 1948 to serve the community in Singapore, Malaysia and Thopputhurai. The association name was changed and gazetted on 15th
July 2004 as “THOPPUTHURAI MUSLIM ASSOCIATION (SINGAPORE)” - TMAS. We are affiliated with Federation of Indian Muslims Singapore (FIM) from 2004.
The early generation people migrated from Thopputhurai (a village town in Nagapattinam District, Tamil Nadu with a predominant Muslim population) to Singapore mostly stay at the places like Tanjong Pagar and Jalan Sultan and Shenton Way areas. They have to be united in those days because the gangsters disturbing were there in those days & law and order are not like today. Indians lived in Serangoon area; Arabs in Arab Street; Indian Muslims in Market, Chulia street; Europeans in Orchard road & Chinese in Telok Ayer, Bras Baseh and all around Singapore. The Chinese started their own association like Hokkien Association, Cantonese Association and Nanyang Association and many others. They
form this association to cater the needs of migrants and as well as needy and
poor people of Thopputhurai and villages nearby.
The association was formed by the founder members like, Janab S.M.Noordin Marackayar as the President, Janab K.Abdul Wahab as the Secretary, Janab M.Faquir Mohammad Ravuthar as the Treasurer and twenty other members at 1948. One member gave his place for the association to hold its office. At the beginning subscription fee was collected as twelve Singapore dollars and donation. From early dates to date with this small subscription & donation, the association started its contribution to the community of Singapore and Thopputhurai like providing monetary aid, marriage fund, medical aid, funneral services (Jennazah / mayyath) education funds and building funds for mosques, madrashas, schools and homes for the needies. We are celebrating the “Milad Nabi”,“Family Day”and “Iftar” function every year.
